The 10 Best Photo Spots in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is an absolutely fantastic destination. From its lively Fringe festival to the numerous pubs that abound on every street corner, this city can be a treat for any holiday. Another reason to journey to Scotland's capital city is its amazing photo spots.

With a historical castle, mysterious graveyard, and more, make sure to stop at these beautiful and prominent locations!

1. Holyrood Palace

The official residence of the British Royal family in Scotland since the 16th century, Holyrood Palace has a rich history that included Mary, Queen of Scots.

Open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays and when the royal family is in residence, make sure to check the website before heading there so you can know about any closures.

If you don't want to buy an admission ticket (£17.50 - £18.50 depending on the season), head to the Palace's south gate which gives you a fantastic view of the front facade. It can either be the starting point or ending point of a walkthrough of Holyrood Park. (a park that contains Arthur's Seat - another fantastic photo spot!)

2. Arthur's Seat

As mentioned above, Arthur's Seat is located in Holyrood Park and is the main peak in Edinburgh. Shaped in a loosely looking throne, there are numerous ways to reach the top, however, if you are looking for the easiest ascent, take the east side which is a grassy slope to the lookout location.

This is one of the most recognizable places in Edinburgh and is used for various purposes; we even watched a movie being filmed while we were there. My suggestion is to bring a picnic basket and enjoy the views on a sunny day (you might have to wait until the rain stops but believe me it's worth it!)

3. Dean's Village

One of the quintessential locations in Edinburgh is the beautiful Dean's Village. Start down the small Hawthornbank Lane and find yourself in a picture book scenery.

The most famous building in Dean's Village is Well Court Hall and its red sandstone bricks make a perfect background for any Instagrammable picture. Once you've finished wandering through this picturesque destination, end up in Stockbridge and prepare for more fantastic places!

4. Circus Lane

Another pretty location is the single street called Circus Lane. Lined with flowers and with St. Stephen's Church in the distance this is the perfect place for photos!

We had great weather during our visit to Circus Lane, but I've heard that the ivy-covered doorways look fantastic during colder and wetter weather as well.

Be aware that this is a residential area and you should be respectful to the occupants.

5. Greyfriars Bobby

Edinburgh has a haunting history associated with death and cemeteries, however, a more uplifting story is associated with the Greyfriars Bobby. A loyal dog to John Gray, Bobby stayed at his owner's grave for 14 years before being buried close by in the same cemetery.

The famous dog has a commemorative statue as well as a Pub outside of the cemetery in his honor and is considered a delightful tourist attraction to the Edinburgh visitor. The story goes in order to get good luck all you need to do is rub his nose!

6. Edinburgh Castle

The main attraction for a holiday in Edinburgh has to be Edinburgh Castle! As one of the oldest palaces in Europe, this castle is a historical landmark and an important addition to Scotland's memories.

This is very popular with tourists so I suggest getting there as earlier as possible and book your tickets beforehand.

7. grow urban.

For a slice of plant heaven, dip into grow urban. Located in Stockbridge, this tranquil store sells indoor plants, outdoor plants, home decor, coffee, and more.

Wonder through the different rooms, stay awhile to work, or simply soak up the atmosphere, grow urban. will become your favorite location to visit during Edinburgh.

8. The Black Medicine Coffee Co.

Unfortunately, I did not think to take a photo of the inside but this eclectic coffee shop should be enjoyed and savored.

With extensive options in coffee and a wide array of hot treats, stop by before you head for a full day of exploring Edingburgh or the Highlands.

9. Advocate's Close

This blink-and-you'll-miss-it lane along the Royal Mile gives visitors the perfect viewpoint of Scott Monument.

The Scott Monument is a memorial to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott and can easily be seen around the city, however, Advocate's Close makes a perfect frame for this truly magnificent sight.

10. The Vennel

I left the best for last! The Vennel is a necessity to see Edinburgh Castle in all its glory. Climb its steps from Grassmarket Square and turn around to see the best viewpoint.

It is a famous spot so you'll have to wait a bit before having your chance at the perfect photo, but its definitely a spot you won't want to miss.

Although I've given you the 10 best photo spots in Edinburgh there are still some more amazing places to visit while you are there. However, if you want to follow along with this blog, check out the map below for the addresses.
